Isotretinoin (Roaccutane): The Ultimate Guide to Treating Severe Acne

Acne can be frustrating, painful, and at times overwhelming. For some, over-the-counter creams and prescription antibiotics help keep breakouts under control. But if you’ve tried these treatments and are still struggling with severe or persistent acne, you may be wondering if there’s something stronger that really works. That’s where Isotretinoin (often known by the brand name Roaccutane) comes in. It’s a powerful treatment that targets acne at its source and, for many people, it can deliver life-changing, long-term results. This guide covers everything you need to know about Isotretinoin: what it’s used for, how it works, who can prescribe it, possible side effects, and why proper monitoring is so important. What is Isotretinoin (Roaccutane)? Isotretinoin is an oral medication derived from vitamin A. It’s usually recommended when other acne treatments haven’t worked, especially for: Severe or cystic acne Acne that leads to scarring Acne that has a big impact on self-confidence or mental health Because of its effectiveness, Isotretinoin is often described as the “gold standard” treatment for severe acne. Many people find that after completing one course, their skin stays clear for years or even permanently. How Does It Work? Unlike most treatments that only address one aspect of acne, Isotretinoin works on several fronts at the same time, tackling the root causes rather than just the surface symptoms. Here’s how: Reduces oil production – Shrinks sebaceous (oil) glands so they produce much less sebum. Excess sebum clogs pores and feeds bacteria, so reducing oil helps keep pores clearer and less inflamed. Prevents clogged pores – Regulates how skin cells renew themselves, preventing dead cells from sticking together and blocking pores. This helps stop blackheads and whiteheads from forming. Fights acne-causing bacteria – By lowering oil and changing the environment inside pores, Isotretinoin reduces the growth of Cutibacterium acnes. Calms inflammation – Its anti-inflammatory properties reduce redness, swelling, and tenderness. Long-term reset of the skin – Many people find their acne doesn’t return after a course, or only comes back in a much milder form. Real-life Examples Someone with very oily skin and frequent cystic breakouts often sees a dramatic reduction in painful deep spots. For those who have tried antibiotics and creams without success, Isotretinoin clears bacteria and blocked pores when other treatments fail. Patients with inflamed, red acne that leaves scars benefit from its anti-inflammatory effect, which reduces new scarring. This combination of benefits—and the potential for long-term remission—makes Isotretinoin one of the most comprehensive acne treatments available today. Who Can Prescribe It? Because it’s such a strong treatment, Isotretinoin can’t be bought over the counter. It can only be prescribed by: Consultant Dermatologists GPs with a specialist interest in dermatology This ensures your treatment is safe, carefully managed, and tailored to your needs. What to Expect During Treatment If you and your doctor decide Isotretinoin is right for you, the process usually involves: Initial consultation – Review of your skin, medical history, and previous treatments. Pre-treatment checks – Blood tests for liver function and cholesterol. Women also need a pregnancy test, with reliable contraception required during and shortly after treatment. Personalised dosage – Your dose is calculated based on your weight and skin condition. Most courses last 4–7 months. Regular monitoring – Monthly reviews with blood tests and, if needed, pregnancy tests. Aftercare support – Guidance to help you maintain results after treatment. Possible Side Effects Isotretinoin is highly effective, but like any medication, it can cause side effects. Most are mild and temporary, but it’s important to know what to expect. Common side effects include: Dry lips and skin (almost universal; moisturiser and lip balm are essential) Dry eyes (lubricating drops may help) Nosebleeds (from dryness inside the nose) Increased sensitivity to sunlight (daily SPF is a must) Temporary flare-ups (acne may worsen before improving) Less common side effects include: Muscle and joint aches Mood changes such as feeling low, irritable, or anxious Changes in liver function or cholesterol (monitored with blood tests) Hair thinning or changes in hair texture Headaches or blurred vision (rare but should be reported immediately) Most side effects improve or disappear once treatment ends, and with proper monitoring, they can be managed effectively. Why Monitoring Matters Because Isotretinoin affects the whole body, regular monitoring is vital to ensure safety. Monitoring usually includes: Blood tests for liver function and cholesterol Pregnancy testing for women before, during, and after treatment Regular reviews with your dermatologist to track progress and adjust dosage if needed This careful approach is what makes Isotretinoin both safe and effective for most people. Retatrutide: The Next Big Step in Weight Management?

There’s a lot of excitement in the medical world about a new treatment called Retatrutide. Early research suggests it may help people lose more weight than any medication currently available – and improve other aspects of health along the way. So what is Retatrutide, how does it work, and how does it compare to treatments like Wegovy and Mounjaro that are already making headlines? What is Retatrutide? Retatrutide (reh-ta-tru-tide) is being developed by the same company that makes Ozempic and Mounjaro. What makes it stand out is its triple action: By targeting all three pathways, Retatrutide could provide a more powerful and balanced effect on appetite, metabolism, and weight. What Have Studies Shown So Far? In a major early trial, Retatrutide produced some remarkable results: The most common side effects were mild and temporary, such as nausea or digestive upset, which are similar to what we see with other GLP-1–based medications. It’s important to note that these results are based on clinical trials and not everyone will experience the same level of benefit or tolerability. How Does Retatrutide Compare to What’s Available Now? At present, two of the most widely used injectable weight-loss medications are: Early Retatrutide studies suggest up to 24% weight loss, making it the most effective to date in clinical trials. That’s approaching the kind of results we normally associate with weight-loss surgery, but without the need for an operation. All weight management treatments should be prescribed and monitored by a qualified healthcare professional. They are not suitable for everyone, and the right approach depends on your individual health and medical history. When Might Retatrutide Be Available? Retatrutide is still being studied in large-scale Phase 3 trials. If all goes as planned, it could be available by 2026. Until then, Wegovy and Mounjaro remain proven, effective treatments already transforming lives. Why Does This Matter? Obesity is complex – it’s not just about willpower. Hormones, metabolism, genetics and lifestyle all play a role. Medications like Retatrutide are designed to address these biological factors safely and effectively. The potential benefits go far beyond weight loss alone. By improving blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, these treatments may also help reduce the risk of conditions like diabetes, fatty liver disease and heart disease. Our Approach at sk:Inspire Medical At sk:Inspire Medical, we stay up to date with the latest developments so we can offer the best evidence-based options to our patients. Retatrutide isn’t available yet, but its future looks very promising. In the meantime, there are excellent weight management treatments available right now, including Wegovy and Mounjaro, which we offer as part of a comprehensive, doctor-led programme.

The Importance of Regular Health Screenings

Your Body Deserves a Service Too  Most of us understand the importance of routine maintenance, whether it’s servicing a car, upgrading software, or checking the smoke alarm. Yet when it comes to our own health, we often adopt a “wait and see” approach, hoping that symptoms resolve on their own or dismissing them as simply part of a busy life.  At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we believe your health deserves more attention and proactive care starts with regular health screening.  What Is a Health Screen?  A health screening is a structured, comprehensive check-up that assesses key aspects of your physical wellbeing. It helps identify early signs of common but potentially serious conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, liver or kidney problems, and even certain cancers. It also offers the opportunity to discuss lifestyle factors, diet, exercise, stress levels, sleep, and mental wellbeing, that play a significant role in your long-term health.  Screenings are not just for those with symptoms. In fact, their greatest value lies in detecting risk factors before they become problems. Many health conditions progress quietly in the background, showing no obvious signs until they are far more difficult to manage. Early detection means early intervention and often, much better outcomes.  Why Consider a Screening?  Health screening is not about generating worry; it’s about empowering you with knowledge. By understanding your health profile, you gain the ability to make informed decisions about your lifestyle, treatment options, or preventive strategies.  It also gives you the peace of mind that comes with knowing where you stand and if changes are needed, our team can guide you every step of the way.  Some of the most common reasons our patients choose to have a health screening include:  What Can You Expect at sk:INSPIRE Medical?  Our screenings are designed to be thorough, evidence-based, and completely tailored to you. We don’t believe in a generic, one-size-fits-all approach. Whether you’re looking for a general check-up or a more focused assessment—such as men’s health, women’s health, cardiovascular risk, or an executive health screen—we’ll build your assessment based on your needs and concerns.  A typical screening may include:  And most importantly you’ll have time to speak with one of our experienced clinicians without feeling rushed. We’ll answer your questions, explain your results in detail, and work with you to create a plan for long-term health and wellbeing.  Invest in Your Most Valuable Asset  Your health is your foundation. It affects how you work, how you care for others, how you enjoy life. Taking the time to attend a health screening isn’t indulgent it’s wise. Just as you wouldn’t ignore a warning light on your car, you shouldn’t ignore the opportunity to understand and protect your body’s wellbeing.  At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we’re here to support you in taking control of your health, with compassion, discretion, and expert care. If it’s been a while since your last check-up or if you’ve never had one this could be the ideal time to start.  To book your personalised health screen, or to find out more about our services, click here to visit our Health Checks page, or get in touch with our friendly team today.

The Importance of Prostate Checks: A Vital Conversation We Need to Have

Prostate health might not be a topic that gets people talking at dinner parties, but it’s one we need to discuss more openly. Recently, cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy shared his experience of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, shining a spotlight on an issue that often lurks in the shadows. His story is a timely reminder that prostate checks can save lives. Here’s why they matter, the potential symptoms to look out for, and how you can take charge of your health. Why Prostate Checks Are Crucial Symptoms of Prostate Cancer While prostate cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms in the early stages, some men may experience: It’s important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions like an enlarged prostate or prostatitis, but they should never be ignored. If you notice any of these changes, consult a healthcare professional promptly. What Does Screening Involve? Contrary to popular fears, prostate checks are straightforward and often non-invasive: Together, these can offer an accurate picture of your prostate health. Breaking the Stigma Unfortunately, the stigma around men’s health persists. Many avoid prostate checks out of fear, embarrassment, or simply not prioritizing it. Yet, by normalising conversations around prostate health, we can change attitudes. Encouraging the men in your life to get checked could make all the difference. A Healthier Tomorrow Starts Today If you’re over 50, have a family history of prostate issues, or belong to a higher-risk group, it’s time to talk to your doctor. Even if you’re younger, a discussion about your risk factors is a great starting point. Prostate checks are quick, effective, and could save your life. Your health is your most important ride—keep pedalling forward. If you have questions about prostate checks or are ready to schedule yours, reach out to us at sk:INSPIRE Medical today.

Continuity of Care: A Commitment at sk:INSPIRE Medical

At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we believe that healthcare should not only address immediate concerns but also foster a long-term relationship between patients and their care team. This is where continuity of care becomes essential. It ensures that each patient receives consistent, quality care that evolves with their needs over time. Our team at sk:INSPIRE Medical is dedicated to providing this ongoing support, knowing that it plays a critical role in both prevention and treatment. What is Continuity of Care? Continuity of care refers to the ongoing relationship between a patient and their healthcare provider or medical team. Rather than treating health concerns in isolation, this approach focuses on long-term health management. It allows healthcare professionals to understand a patient’s medical history, track their progress, and tailor care plans that address the person as a whole, not just their symptoms. By having an established relationship, patients feel more comfortable discussing their health concerns, leading to better communication and more personalised treatment. Continuity of care also minimizes the chances of gaps in medical information, which can be crucial when diagnosing or managing complex health issues. Why Continuity of Care Matters 1. Comprehensive Understanding of Health History  When healthcare providers have consistent interactions with patients, they gain a deep understanding of their health background. This helps in making more accurate diagnoses, managing chronic conditions, and predicting potential health risks. 2. Improved Health Outcomes  Studies show that patients who experience continuity of care are more likely to receive preventive services, adhere to treatment plans, and enjoy better health outcomes overall. A trusting relationship with a healthcare provider can lead to early detection of issues, timely interventions, and reduced hospital admissions. 3. Patient-Centred Care  Continuity of care is about more than just maintaining medical records—it’s about building a relationship. This approach ensures that care is tailored to each individual, fostering a sense of trust and comfort between patient and provider. Patients are more likely to share vital information when they feel known and understood by their medical team. Our goal is to be there for you every step of the way, whether it’s routine checkups, chronic disease management, or addressing acute concerns. “Continuity of care is the cornerstone of effective healthcare. At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we prioritise long-term relationships with our patients because it allows us to provide more holistic, tailored treatment. When a patient trusts their care team, the results are clear: better health, stronger prevention, and more positive outcomes overall.” — *Dr. Ravi Brar*

The Importance of Regular Mole Checks: Early Detection Saves Lives

At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we emphasise the importance of taking proactive steps when it comes to your health. One such vital step is regular mole checks, which can be crucial in detecting skin cancer early, particularly melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. With early detection, treatment is more effective, often leading to better outcomes and less invasive procedures. Regular mole checks are a simple but powerful way to stay ahead of potential risks. Why Regular Mole Checks Matter Moles are common skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body. While most are harmless, certain changes in a mole’s appearance can signal the early stages of skin cancer. Because these changes can be subtle, routine monitoring and professional evaluations are essential. Early detection allows for timely treatment, which can often prevent cancer from spreading and becoming life-threatening. Here are the key reasons why regular mole checks are critical: 1. Early Detection of Skin Cancer  Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, but when detected early, it’s also one of the most treatable. Regular mole checks help in spotting any suspicious changes that could indicate melanoma or other skin cancers. By identifying these changes early, healthcare professionals can intervene before the cancer progresses. 2. Understanding the ABCDEs of Melanoma  During a mole check, doctors look for specific signs using the ABCDE method. This can help in determining whether a mole is potentially cancerous:    ‘A’- symmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other half.    ‘B’-order: The edges of the mole are irregular, ragged, or blurred.    ‘C’ -olour: The mole has varying shades of brown, black, or even red, white, or blue.    ‘D’- iameter: The mole is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller.    ‘E’ -volving: The mole changes in size, shape, or colour over time. Familiarising yourself with these signs and checking your moles regularly at home, in addition to professional assessments, can significantly improve your chances of catching melanoma early. 3. Peace of Mind Even if most of your moles are harmless, regular checks offer peace of mind. Knowing that a healthcare professional has thoroughly examined your skin can alleviate anxiety and help you feel more confident about your health. If anything suspicious is found, quick action can be taken, reducing uncertainty and ensuring the best possible care. 4. Personalised Monitoring  Everyone’s skin is unique, and some people may be more prone to developing moles or skin cancer than others. Factors like family history, skin type, or excessive sun exposure increase the risk. At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we create a personalised plan based on your specific risk factors, ensuring you receive the care and monitoring you need. When Should You Have a Mole Check? While everyone should be mindful of their skin’s appearance, you should schedule regular mole checks with a healthcare provider if you notice: It’s also recommended to have a professional mole check once a year, even if you don’t notice any changes. If you have a family history of skin cancer, more frequent checks might be advised. Our Approach at sk:INSPIRE Medical At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we are committed to helping you stay vigilant about your skin health. Our team is experienced in performing comprehensive mole checks, using advanced tools and techniques to detect any potential signs of skin cancer early. We work with you to develop a regular schedule of skin evaluations and provide guidance on how to perform self-examinations at home. Taking Charge of Your Skin Health Mole checks are quick, painless, and could save your life. Don’t wait until you notice changes—make mole checks a regular part of your health routine. At sk:INSPIRE Medical, we are here to ensure your skin is as healthy as it can be, providing the care and expertise you need for early detection and peace of mind. Book your mole check today, and take the next step in protecting your health.

Skin positivity. More than just a hash-tag

In this day and age, we are surrounded by heavily filtered, photoshopped images of celebrities and models on social media. This might give some an unrealistic view of what ‘we should look like’. With this culture at the forefront of society, there’s no surprise that there is a strong link between how we view our skin and mental health. I am sure my colleagues in the medical field will agree with me on this; I certainly have seen patients in my own clinic who feel low self-esteem and confidence as result. And of course, skin conditions such as acne to name one example can also have a huge impact on mental health. Dr Vanisha and I have been friends since our time at the prestigious Guys and St Thomas Medical School. We both realised we shared a passion for dermatology and treating patients holistically.  This lead to the birth of sk:INSPIRE Medical Aesthetics. Our philosophy is to help our patients understand their skin, its’ beauty and any skin conditions or signs of ageing one might be experiencing. Through this, we help promote skin positivity, encourage skin health and help treat any skin concerns you might have. At sk:INSPIRE Medical Aesthetics when we carry out a consultation, we pay a lot of attention to the history; listening to the patient’s unique story, discussing what they have previously tried for their skin, and extracting useful ‘biopsychosocial’ information, whilst ruling out any worrying signs or symptoms. And of course, the skin is a visual organ, so a thorough examination of the skin is a crucial part of any doctors assessment. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has truly changed and tested the way doctors and dermatologists have been consulting…but that’s for another time! Nevertheless, it means more of our patients have had the time and ability to access skin consultations with clinicians like ourselves. Because of this, amongst other reasons, there has been a spike in sales of cosmeceuticals during the lockdown and they have polarised patients. These products certainly have a place in one’s skincare routine, especially when used with an understanding of its suitability, but our doctors, at sk:INSPIRE, can go one step further and prescribe other treatments e.g. prescription-only topicals or antibiotics where cosmeceuticals can only do so much. Skincare is a multi-billion-pound business, with a new cream or serum launched daily, each promising to cure skin conditions such as pigmentation, acne and signs of ageing. However, treating your skin concerns is not just about buying some creams and putting them on. Understanding your skin, why you are using a specific treatment and ensuring it is the correct treatment in order for you to achieve your end goal, are important steps in any skin journey. You might have gathered from our posts that we have a passion in educating our patients on skin and skin treatments. Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with having skin treatments, whether it is for a medical condition e.g. acne, or for cosmetic/rejuvenation purposes. The key is to treat the patient as an individual and tailor any recommendation to their specific needs. More importantly, the clinician should not be reluctant to say no, if they feel the patients’ desired outcome is unattainable or unrealistic. We believe honest and frank discussions need to take place to encourage skin health, skin positivity and help patients understand their skin, its beauty, as well as its so-called ‘flaws’. This is why we encourage our patients to understand WHY they have been advised a certain skincare regime or treatment, and what the key ingredients are, so they can get the best results. On doing this, they can truly enjoy their skin journey. Acne Be Gone: A Lighthearted Guide

So, what is acne exactly? It’s a common skin condition that happens when your hair follicles (aka pores) get clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to red, inflamed bumps on your skin, also known as pimples. Acne can show up on your face, neck, chest, and back and can come in different forms like blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, and cysts. There are a few different things that can cause acne. Hormonal changes, genetics, and certain lifestyle choices can all play a role. But no matter what the cause, there are ways to treat it. You can try over-the-counter medications like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, or you can talk one of our doctors about using stronger strengths as well as about prescription options like retinoids, antibiotics, and hormonal therapies. But here’s the thing, treating acne isn’t just about using the right products. Lifestyle changes can also make a big difference. Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and avoiding touching or picking at your skin can all help prevent and reduce acne. And of course, keeping your skin clean by washing your face twice a day with a mild cleanser and warm water is a must. If you’re dealing with acne, don’t be afraid to reach out to one of our doctors for help. They can figure out the root cause of your acne and recommend a personalized treatment plan. And remember, clear skin is possible! With the right approach, you can say goodbye to breakouts and hello to smooth, glowing skin.

Skin Ageing

Skin ageing – it’s a topic that we all have to face eventually, but it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom! In fact, with a little bit of knowledge and effort, you can slow down the clock and keep your skin looking youthful and radiant for years to come. Think of your skin like a fine wine – the older it gets, the more refined and beautiful it becomes. But just like a fine wine, it needs to be properly cared for if it’s going to reach its full potential. And, the good news is that taking care of your skin is a lot more fun than you might think! Let’s start with the basics – UV radiation from the sun is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to skin ageing. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors all day! Just remember to slather on some high-SPF sunscreen before you go out and enjoy the sunshine. And, if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, don’t be afraid to accessorise with a stylish hat or some funky shades. Stress is another factor that can contribute to skin ageing, but did you know that taking care of your skin can actually help reduce stress? That’s right – taking the time to pamper yourself with a relaxing skincare routine can help you unwind and de-stress after a long day. And, incorporating some stress-relieving activities into your routine, such as exercise or meditation, can also help keep skin looking youthful and radiant. Food is another important factor when it comes to skin ageing. Instead of viewing it as a chore, think of eating a balanced diet as a fun and delicious adventure! Explore new foods, try new recipes, and experiment with different ingredients. And, don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated and looking its best. There are also plenty of fun skin care products and treatments available to help slow down the ageing process. Retinoids, for example, are a type of Vitamin A derivative that can help stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.. And, if you’re feeling daring, why not try a chemical peel, micro-needling or a laser treatment to give your skin a boost? In conclusion, skin ageing is a natural process that we all have to face eventually, but it doesn’t have to be a bore. With a little bit of effort and some fun twists on traditional skincare techniques, you can keep your skin looking youthful and radiant for years to come. So, go ahead and embrace the journey – your skin will thank you for it!
