Cysts

A cyst is a closed, sac-like structure filled with liquid, semi-solid, or gaseous material. It can develop anywhere in the body and often results from infections, clogged glands, or inflammation. Cysts are typically non-cancerous but may require medical attention if they become painful or infected.

Cysts are sac-like structures that can form beneath the skin, often filled with fluid, pus, or other materials.

There are usually two types of cysts

1. Sebaceous cysts – This is a non-cancerous, closed sac located under the skin, typically filled with a thick, whitish substance composed of keratin and sebum. These cysts form when the sebaceous gland or its duct becomes blocked, often due to trauma or damage to the skin. They are common on the face, neck, and back but can occur anywhere on the body. Sebaceous cysts are usually slow-growing, painless, and movable lumps beneath the skin. However, they can become swollen, red, and tender if they become infected or inflamed. During the removal of sebaceous cysts, they may rupture, breaking into pieces.

2. Pilar cysts (also known as a trichilemmal cyst,) – This is also a benign, non-cancerous growth that occurs on the scalp. These cysts develop from the outer root sheath of a hair follicle and are filled with keratin, the protein that makes up hair and nails. Pilar cysts are usually smooth, firm, and round, and they can vary in size. They are often hereditary, meaning they can run in families.

Unlike sebaceous cysts, pilar cysts typically have a thicker wall, which makes them less likely to rupture and easier to remove intact. Pilar cysts are generally painless and slow-growing, but they can become tender or inflamed if they are irritated or infected

Bot types are removed by the ‘Cut and Stitch method’ with the contents sent to the lab for further assessment.
