Keloid Scars

Keloid scars are an abnormal type of scar tissue that forms at the site of a healed skin injury or wound. Unlike normal scars that remain relatively flat and confined to the original wound area, keloids grow beyond the boundaries of the original injury and can be raised, thickened, and often have a shiny, smooth surface. They may appear reddish, pinkish, or darker than the surrounding skin.

Keloids can develop after any type of skin injury, such as acne scars, surgical scars, burns, vaccinations, piercings, or cuts. They are more common in individuals with darker skin tones and tend to occur more frequently on the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and cheeks.

The exact cause of keloids is not fully understood, but they are thought to result from an overgrowth of scar tissue due to an abnormal response to collagen production and tissue repair processes. Factors such as genetic predisposition, skin tension at the wound site, and inflammation may contribute to their formation.

Keloids are generally harmless and non-cancerous, but they can be itchy, tender, or even painful. They can also cause cosmetic concerns due to their appearance.

We target keloids through topical or injections. Prices are discussed during you pre-operative consultation which is £75. Corticosteroid injection cost from £200 per lesion.
