Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects areas of the body with a high density of sebaceous (oil-producing) glands, such as the scalp, face, and upper body. It is also commonly referred to as seborrheic eczema.
Characteristics of Seborrheic Dermatitis
- Symptoms:
- Scaly patches: These can appear yellow or white and are often oily or greasy.
- Red skin: The affected areas may appear red and inflamed.
- Itching: It can range from mild to severe.
- Flaking: Similar to dandruff, especially on the scalp, eyebrows, beard area, and sides of the nose.
- Crusting: Particularly on the scalp, leading to potential hair loss if severe.
- Greasy skin: The skin in the affected areas often appears greasy or oily.
We work together to customise a treatment plan that can range from avoiding triggers, to topical shampoos and creams to oral medication. In patients where seborrheic dermatitis is severe, unresponsive to treatment blood tests and further investigations in form of skin scrappings and biopsies may be required.
